MY HERO (BESSIE HEAD)
- BACKGROUND HISTORY
Bessie Head was born in Pietermaritzburg in Durban.
She was coloured .
Even though at the time interracial relations were not allowed, but anyhow her parents managed to be together.
Upon the discovery of her mother’s pregnancy and the interracial relationship, her mother was sent to a mental hospital and that’s where Bessie would be born
In the 1950’s and the 60’s Bessie Head was a school teacher, then a journalist for Drum magazine.
Later in 1964 she was exiled to Botswana and that’s where she spent most of her life until her death 1986.
HER WORK
She was a writer and most of her work is set in Serowe a village in Botswana which was her home in her adopted country.
She produced books like:
1.When rain clouds gather
2.Maru
3.A question of power
She also published a lot of short stories, including:
1.The collector of treasures
2.Serowe:Village of rain wind
3.A Bewitched crossroads - THE REASON WHY SHE IS MY HERO.
I love her work very much, the way she used the descriptive language its very diligent. All of her novels depict her life in Botswana, but she used different characters to convey her experiences of Botswana. Her descriptive language is so good that she takes you right into Botswana, right into Serowe, you feel it, you experience it even though you were not there .She was so good that in some of her writing you can distinguish between her academic and creative writing, a good example would be her book Serowe: Village of rain wind.
