YOULANDREE'S LIFE GOES ON!

Youlandree Apassamy is 20. She is from White River; went to White River Primary School and Pernryn College and is now a student of Journalism & Media Studies at Rhodes University.

Youlandree loves novels and has read Things Fall Apart by the late Chinua Achebe. She studies journalism because she loves to write and she likes to change South African media landscape.

She says her lecturers are excellent especially in radio production. She applied for the FJP because she believes it alters students’ lives.

“Funny enough,  [the] Oscar Pistorious story which is bad for South Africa,” she complained “now tourists are afraid to visit our country because they think all of Mzansi people are like that.”

According to Youlandree, Pistorius might not be a murder, but someone who made a mistake, which all human beings are capable of making.

A studious person who likes the challenges in the classroom, Youlandree enjoys being at university because it’s good to be away from home. Indeed Rhodes is her home away from home.

Born in Esikhaweni a small township in Durban, Sinenhlanhla Sibisi is the first born and only girl in a family of three. She went to primary school in Velden Vlei, and on to Ross College until Matric.
She is now at the University of Zululand reading towards a BA (Psychology and Communication Science) and she wants to be a psychologist when she ‘grows up’.

Sibisi was initially sceptical about joining the Future Journalist Programme (FJP), but her lecturer [Mrs Moodley] encouraged her to participate and discover, learn, explore and socialise with other people from different institutions and backgrounds.
What other people don’t know about Sibisi is that she was a shy as a little girl, and did not like being around people. Now? She is outgoing and likes to have fun with friends. She also takes extra classes in Drama.
For her, people learn from their mistakes and should not be ashamed of who they are or where they come from. In life no one is perfect, Sibisi says.

Anti-political but still a believer!

Khethukuthula Lembethe

FJP: Khethukuthula Lembethe

By Siyabonga Myeni

Khethukuthula Lembethe was born in 1993, in Kwadabeka but was raised in Pinetown, Durban. She defines journalism as one which strives to inform, challenge and neutrally tell stories to the ever listening society. She matriculated from Queensburgh Girls High school in 2011 and is now a student at the Durban University of Technology.

She states she is spiritual, as well as selfish.

She confessed that she has never voted for any political party, arguing that there are no parties that cater for individuals like her. Khethukuthula defines her idea of an authentic political party as one which acknowledges the needs of the broader public, and not only comprehend the challenges of the society, but also its growing needs. She opinionates that political parties are pretentious and deceive the public with a seemingly positive image. Khethukuthula is especially concerned about politics after losing an uncle who was running for counsellor.

Khethukuthula says she is fortunate to be on the way to attaining a degree, but worries about the amount of work.

Khethukuthula does not intend involving herself with any political issue or position, but admits that she would vote for the ANC if it were prerequisite for her to accomplish anything.

What may seem as another tedious, long and boring school assignment may be the beginning of a multi-million rand empire. This is what Soulful magazine discovered after interviewing 21-year-old student Loyiso Malgas.

Born and bred in East London, Loyiso has always been fascinated by the media industry. His interest in media led him to study a one-year course in Media Consultancy at Boston College. He then moved on to study a Diploma in Journalism at the Walter Sisulu University. “I want to be the voice of the voiceless and give back to the community,” Loyiso calmly says.

As part of his 1st Year of studies at WSU, Loyiso was asked compile ideas for a magazine for Photo Journalism which is one of his majors. This project entails an original plan and idea about a magazine of the student’s interest which would only be printed and graded at the end of 2nd year. Loyiso’s passion for sports led him to choose an innovative idea about a provincial sports magazine titled “The 411”.

With other successful sports magazines such as Soccer Laduma, and Kick Off, what would make The 411’s magazine concept different? Loyiso believes his magazine concept will be “different from the rest” by being budget-friendly, having diverse and versatile content, and by providing consumer commentary.

Loyiso says The 411 is set to bring more local content but still appeal to readers and audiences of all race groups. His magazine will target sports fanatics aged 18-35, and he will use social media as a marketing tool.

Loyiso believes that this project is a great exercise for a career in print journalism and plans to get a distinction and make this more than just a school project.

Rhodes University student Nompilo Mncube, 20 believes family support is the reason she is doing so well today, academically and socially.  Mncube is a 2nd Year Journalism & Media Studies student in Grahamstown.  She is good with people, sociable, crazy and a neat freak. She does maintain that there are times she just wants to be alone and have some “me time,” however.

Mncube was born in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal, the only girl in a family of three.  Her father died in 2001 after a long illness,  and her mother Maureen Mncube the children (Nompilo, Sibusiso, 25 and Siyabonga, 14) into responsible young adults.
Maureen, who is a nurse, took over her late husband’s taxi business, and today, Sibusiso assists with its day-to-day running.  Young Siyabonga in Grade 8 is an extrovert who does his bit in the running of the Mncube household.

“Despite any fights which may occur between my brothers and I, we are very protective, supportive, and my family is more important to me than anything else in the world.”
The Mncubes hope to expand the business to trucks and go national.  Nompilo is an aspiring businesswoman who wants to start her own events coordinating company. She also hopes to branch out into retail selling equipment for events.

With the family support the Mncubes give one another, Nompilo can surely never fail in her future endeavours, as a strong family orientated and businesswoman.
The sky is surely not the limit for this young woman.
