Today at Eden Grove, Rhodes University marked the start of WordFest. The festival promotes literacy and poetry and also includes the blind. It is funded and supported by the National Arts Council.
The WordFest MC was Mandlakayise Matyumza. The vice chancellor of Rhodes University, Dr Saleem Badat welcomed everyone and talked about the differences that Fest has. The vice chancellor says the WordFest is an “exciting initiative, which has limited resources”. The poets got an opportunity to recite their poetry in their mother tongues and express their work freely and easily.
The MEC of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Xoliswa Tom said that children should read more and Mxit less.

I agree that everyone should read more - do you know that MXit now has a section called Mbooks (Tradepost, MXit Mix, Entertainment, MBooks) where an entire teenage fiction fantasy book, called Emily and the Battle of the Veil, can be read on MXit. The second of the series, called Emily and the Sprites of Light, will also be available shortly. We're trying to encourage reading -so perhaps more "MXit" reading, than no reading at all? :-)
